LIVING FOR THE WEEKEND – NORTHERN SOUL OF THE 1970s
U.K. documentary. Excellent quality. Northern Soul was the most exciting underground British club movement of the 1970s. At its highpoint, thousands of white working class youths across the north of England danced to obscure, mid-60s Motown-inspired 45 rpm records until dawn. A youth culture of fashion, dance and vinyl obsession grew up around this—all fueled by the love of rare, black American soul music with a pounding beat.

It was a Miami thrift shop selling old, discarded 45 rpm records, that produced the motherlode of over 4000 records that were brought back to England to become the soundtrack of the Northern Soul scene.

Through first-hand accounts and rare footage, this film charts northern soul's dramatic rise, fall and re-birth. It reveals the scene's roots in the mod culture of the 1960s and how important clubs like Manchester's Twisted Wheel and Sheffield's Mojo helped create the prototype that would take hold in the next decade.

KEEPING THE FAITH – NORTHERN SOUL OF THE 1970s
U.K. documentary. Excellent quality. Northern Soul marked the birth of late-night dance culture in Britain. This film looks at the famous "all-nighters" at Manchester's Wigan Casino, discovers the origin of this underground music scene and why it continues to inspire such devotion.

Many of the songs that eventually became Northern Soul classics were once rejected or unreleased. Recorded in the 1960s by African-American artists attempting to replicate the successful Motown sound, these discarded tracks would later be rediscovered and revered by white working-class dancers and music fans in the north of Britain.
