Hollywood and the Stars was a ½ hr documentary TV series that ran from 1963-1964. Presented here are episodes extracted from the series that focus on youth culture and interests of 1964 teenagers.

TEEN-AGE IDOLS – PART 1
Jan-8-64. This episode opens with surf rock 'n' roll and dancing teenagers. Then a flashback to 1943 and cool footage of Frank Sinatra as the first teenage idol and the birth of the teenager. Next up: Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Debbie Reynolds, Marlon Brando, Tab Hunter, Sal Mineo and a special emphasis on James Dean and the birth of a cult. Elvis Presley sends parents into panic! Cool behind the scenes footage on an Elvis movie set. Bobby Darin, Paul Anka, Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon, Tommy Sands and Fabian.

Absolutely awesome footage of a "rockabilly show" in Japan that features a group rolling around on the stage and teenagers rushing forward and going ape! Tommy Steele, Bill Haley, Dick Dale, and Ricky Nelson. Dick Clark's position in the teenage world. Cool segment on teenage magazines and movies. Let's put it this way: this is an awesome episode! Little did they know that one month after this episode aired the Beatles would appear on Ed Sullivan and blow the lid off the whole thing!

TEEN-AGE IDOLS – PART 2
Jan-15-64. This episode goes deeper into the teenage idol phenomenon by focusing specifically on the career of Fabian. He's discovered in Philadelphia by Bob Marcucci who thinks Fabian is a cross between Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson. Cool scenes include: Getting fitted for hip threads, the big publicity blitz that launched his career, being advised by Dick Clark, publicity dates with starlets, performances in gymnasiums, kissing the winner of a Fabian contest, and being on tour with artists who Fabian says were drug addicts!

Fabian says he realized that his female fans were awkward and not good looking (meanwhile the camera pans the girls!), and that he represents their fantasy boyfriend. Frantic teenagers rip off his clothes, scratch him and make him bleed! Fabian complains that his manager tells him what to say, what to do and what to think! Meanwhile the press writes nasty things about him. Eventually it's all too much and he quits singing and moves into acting – and he becomes successful. Fabian is shown driving his Porsche onto the MGM studio lot.

MONSTERS WE'VE KNOWN AND LOVED
Jan-13-64. The greatest hits of all your favorite monster movies! Monsters and laboratory lunatics! Germany in the 1920s is the birth of the horror film with, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu and The Golem. Then Hollywood gets into the act. This episode examines the history of the horror film, is wonderfully written and features some great clips from classic and even obscure horror films.

Special effects, miniatures, and trick photography thrill and scare audiences. The anxieties of the atomic age and the challenge of the space era, opens even wider vistas for the monster movies. Science fiction and the world of tomorrow introduce an enticing array of new monsters!

Fun segment shows Lon Chaney, The Man of a Thousand Faces, in over a dozen famous roles. The 1960s introduces the "comic horror film," a movie that makes fun of itself. Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi as themselves (sort of) in a promo film. The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies! Fun!

NATALIE WOOD: HOLLYWOOD'S CHILD
Mar-12-64. This episode focuses on the career of former child star, and now young superstar, Natalie Wood. She's shown on the film set of Sex and the Single Girl, in makeup chair, and working with directors. An interesting scene shows her at 25 watching one of her first films when she was five years old.

Examined is her work with James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause and her acting chops in West Side Story, Splendor In The Grass, and others. She's shown hanging out with friends playing charades.

BIRTH OF A STAR
Nov-11-63. Stefanie Powers is the subject of what goes into making a star. The up-and-coming actress is seen in screen tests for roles she didn't get, in makeup, and participating in drama class. At 17 she gets a role in the film West Side Story but because of child working laws she's only allowed to work 4 hours a day and is dropped from the film.

She's crushed – but she was seen by actor, director, producer Tom Laughlin and given a role in the film Among the Thorns, it is produced on a shoestring budget and never shown in theaters. She becomes admired by teenagers and is given a singing contract with Colpix Records. Stefanie is her own person and doesn't get caught up in the trappings of Hollywood.
