PLAY IT AS IT LAYS 1972
U.S. film. Excellent Quality. Hollywood Decadence. The lives of the rich and bored Los Angeles film community are examined through a fragmented lens in Play It As It Lays. In Hollywood, the idle rich have money, but little else. The sun is always shining, everyone drives a sports car and cocktails are sipped in expensive Malibu homes. If you've ever read a headline about a person who "has it all" and commits suicide, this film may offer an understanding of how that could happen.

Maria Wyeth (Tuesday Weld), a B-movie actress, wanders the gardens of a mental hospital, recollecting the painful events which led to her breakdown. She is married to an adulterous, self-absorbed film director, Carter Lane (Adam Roarke). Disregarded by her husband, Maria occupies herself with a string of one-night stands and becomes pregnant. Her husband divorces her, and she has an illegal abortion. Maria's only friend is B.Z. (Anthony Perkins), a homosexual film producer. Exhausted by it all, he tells Maria that he has found the meaning of life is…nothing. He invites her to commit suicide with him.

It may sound like a bummer but the film is actually a fascinating ride thought early 1970s narcissistic Los Angeles. The photography is erratic and juxtaposed upon different layers of Weld's confused life. Weld's character, Maria, goes to Las Vegas and has a fling with a mobbed-up lawyer, and later returns to L.A. and has a one-night stand with a television star who needs to watch his own TV show to get aroused.

Play It As It Lays reunites Tuesday Weld and Anthony Perkins who stared together in Pretty Poison. Director Frank Perry was producer of the films Ladybug Ladybug and Last Summer which are in the Video Beat catalog. Tuesday Weld, Anthony Perkins, Tammy Grimes, Adam Roarke, Ruth Ford, Tyne Daly, Chuck McCann, Eddie Firestone, Richard Anderson, Diana Ewing.

Plus this bonus selection...

TUESDAY WELD ON DICK CAVETT SHOW 1971
U.S. TV show. Oct-8-71. Tuesday Weld, looking like a hippie chick in a long maxi dress and sunglasses, opens up to reveal her self-destructive side that includes her alcoholic drinking binges and why she turned down (what ended up becoming) huge acting role opportunities.
