Hollywood and the Stars was a ½ hour documentary TV series that ran one season, 1963-64 and aired at 9:30 PM. The series was narrated by Joseph Cotton and featured theme music by Elmer Bernstein. Each episode gave the viewer a different, interesting and usually unknown window into the world of Hollywood.

HOLLYWOOD AND THE STARS - VOLUME 5

MONSTERS WE'VE KNOWN AND LOVED
Jan-13-64. The greatest hits of all your favorite monster movies! Monsters and laboratory lunatics! Germany in the 1920s is the birth of the horror film with, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu and The Golem. Then Hollywood gets into the act. This episode examines the history of the horror film, is wonderfully written and features some great clips from classic and even obscure horror films.

Special effects, miniatures, and trick photography thrill and scare audiences. The anxieties of the atomic age and the challenge of the space era, opens even wider vistas for the monster movies. Science fiction and the world of tomorrow introduce an enticing array of new monsters!

Fun segment shows Lon Chaney, The Man of a Thousand Faces, in over a dozen famous roles. The 1960s introduces the "comic horror film," a movie that makes fun of itself. Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi as themselves (sort of) in a promo film. The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies! Fun!

THE FUNNY MEN - PART 1
Nov-29-63. Presenting the Funniest Men in the World! This two-part episode shows an amazing number of classic and unknown comedy segments from the movies. Fantastic behind the scenes footage at Max Sennett's "Keystone Studios" shows how some of the wildest screen stunts were performed.

Longer segments from the silent era of the 1920s feature Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Charlie Chaplin. Rare rehearsal footage shows Charlie Chaplin without makeup perfecting movements and sight gag timing for the film, City Lights. The 1930s brings sound to movies and a new type of funny man is needed: one who can say funny things. These comedians come from Vaudeville and include Burns and Allen, Jack Benny, Fred Allen, W.C. Fields and others.

THE FUNNY MEN - PART 2
Dec-5-64. The Marx Brothers, The Ritz Brothers, Laurel and Hardy. Extended segments showing classic movie scenes featuring Jack Benny, Red Skelton, W.C. Fields, Abbot and Costello, Martin and Lewis. Comic timing becomes an important tool for comedians. Extended segments feature Jack Benny and Peter Sellers. A more sophisticated type of comedy develops not from comedians but from actors that excel in comic roles. Jack Lemon is featured in an extended segment. Funny bits from, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

THE ANGRY SCREEN
Feb-6-64. The Great Depression results in a cycle of grim, expose' films such as, I Am a Fugitive on Chain Gang. Warner Brothers leads the industry in producing films that inform and arouse while they entertain. Their motto: "Combining Good Citizenship with Good Picture Making" results in films the expose backroom political deals, yellow journalism, lynch mob mentality, juvenile delinquency, and more.

The use of film to influence the mind. An extended segment analyzes several of Nazi Germany's, propaganda films and their effects on the German population. Prior to invading Poland a film was released that depicts a fair German maiden being raped and stoned by a grotesque Polish mob. The Nazi film entitled America, depicts the USA as one vast slum with a wicked Jewish President. Warner Brothers responds with Confessions of a Nazi Spy that is designed to inform an ignorant America of Hitler's actions in Europe.


HOLLYWOOD AND THE STARS - VOLUME 6

THE MAN CALLED BOGART
Sep-30-63. The series premiere examines the life and career of Humphrey Bogart. It begins with his childhood and continues through his stint in the Navy, Broadway, and his screen career. Personal photographs and private movie footage shows Bogart in real life.

THE ONE AND ONLY BING
Dec-23-63. A look at the life and career of Bing Crosby. At the time of this episode Bing had appeared in over 50 movies and sold over 200 million records. In his early years he attends law school but makes money playing in a local band. He drops out of college and has two lean years before joining Paul Whitefield's orchestra. Next, it's Hollywood where Max Sennett sees Bing singing in a club and offers him a part in a film. His casual singing style and partnership with Bob Hope in a series of "Road" pictures entertains and delights audiences. Very rare newsreel footage of Bing and a very young Frank Sinatra singing a few lines together.

THE ODYSSEY OF RITA HAYWORTH
Apr-13-64. In the annals of Hollywood Rita Hayworth holds the distinction of being the first movie star to be called a "love goddess." This episode follows the 30-year career of the former Marguerite Carmen Cansino, the daughter of a Ziegfeld Girl who was discovered at the age of 15. She marries twice and after leaving the Hollywood life she realizes she misses the life and returns as a serious dramatic actress acting in films with Burt Lancaster, John Wayne and others.

BIRTH OF A STAR
Nov-11-63. Stefanie Powers is the subject of what goes into making a star. The up-and-coming actress is seen in screen tests for roles she didn't get, in makeup, and participating in drama class. At 17 she gets a role in the film West Side Story but because of child working laws she's only allowed to work 4 hours a day and is dropped from the film. She's crushed – but she was seen by actor, director, producer Tom Laughlin and given a role in the film Among the Thorns, it is produced on a shoestring budget and never shown in theaters. She becomes admired by teenagers and is given a singing contract with Colpix Records. Stefanie is her own person and doesn't get caught up in the trappings of Hollywood.
