FURY ON WHEELS (a.k.a. JUMP) 1971
U.S. film. Rare racing movie. Uncut version. Cool live-action figure-8 racing and demolition derby footage. Witness the ancient southern ritual of proving one's manhood by accepting a challenge to a figure-8 race.

Chester Jump, a young hillbilly motor head from Appalachia has a dream of supercharging his '64 Chevy Malibu to make it the fastest dang car in the south. His alcoholic daddy who lived through the depression offers Chester no encouragement and tells his boy not to get involved with car racin' and he should git hiself a proper job like "plantin' sum tobaccer."

Chester tries to convince his zombie-like sister to forget the Bible. He says the Bible is a shortcut to a dead-end. He tells her she needs to get off the porch and get out and see things. She says Chester is going to Hell.

Chester and his young pals get drunk down at a bar where the Kentucky Mountain Boys are playing a hot hillbilly breakdown on guitar, banjo and fiddle. He challenges his drinking buddies to a race; the music starts to rock as they all run to their cars and peel out.

While at a figure-8 racetrack Chester catches the eye of a Babe, the cigar-chomping owner of an auto dealership, who offers Chester a deal to apprentice with Dutch, an expert German mechanic in exchange for his services as a low-wage mechanic. Soon Chester has the knowledge to turn his Chevy into the fastest muscle car in the south.

The soundtrack features the Kentucky Mountain Boys and Jonathan Edwards. Edwards had a #4 hit in 1971 with the song, "Sunshine." Chester mentions being so poor he has to eat government commodity meat! (Hey! Is that a Hasil Adkins reference?) The end credits say the producers wish to thank the state of Florida, Pirelli, STP, and Charlie's Girls Incorporated.

The acting is so "non-Hollywood" that the characters seem exceptionally real! Tom Ligon, Logan Ramsey, Collin Wilcox Paxton, Norman Rose, Lada Edmund Jr., Sudie Bond, Conrad Bain, Bette Craig, Vicky Lynn, the Kentucky Mountain Boys.

Plus this bonus selection...

KEEP OFF THE GRASS 1970
U.S. educational short. A film about "blowing pot." Say what?! Tom's mom finds a joint in his bedroom and accuses him of being a dope head. Tom denies it and starts investigating the world of weed heads and dopers. Tom visits a local psychedelic shop, then meets stoners who sit around passing joints and pipes and are clearly "out of it." In the end Tom makes an important life decision, to "keep off the grass."
