EXPLOSION 1969
CAN. film. My son, the draft dodger! Back in the late 1960s people took drugs and made "statement films" with lots of flashbacks. This is one of them. Two brothers spend quality time together before the older flees to Canada to avoid Vietnam. When the boy's girlfriend and father shame him for being a draft dodger, he goes to war...and dies.

When it's the younger brother's turn for Vietnam, he splits for Canada like, pronto. But first he beats the crap out of his brother's girlfriend (slugs her right in the face) and when she begs him to rape her he instead goes berserk and slashes a portrait of his father.

When he arrives in Canada his first stop is a hippie bar that is blaring loud rock 'n' roll and fuzz guitar music. He meets a new friend—a fringed, leather jacket-wearing protester who offers a crash pad and advice on how to score with hippie chicks.

They both steal a Jaguar convertible for kicks but end up getting chased by the police who think they are murderers. Back at home the boy's psychiatrist (Don Barzini from The Godfather) becomes involved and we discover that the boy is a nutcase and would not have been drafted because of his mental status. As dozens of Canadian police and bounty hunters with guns close in and a helicopter buzzes overhead, a battle scene develops that looks like Vietnam.

Good student protest footage. The racetrack scene was filmed at Langley Speedway in Langley BC Canada. Parts of the soundtrack sound like it's from low-budget horror films and TV dramas. Don Stroud, Gordon Thomson, Michèle Chicoine, Richard Conte (Don Barzini in The Godfather), Cec Linder, Robin Ward, Ted Stidder, Murray Matheson, Ann Sears, Olga Kaya. Note: there is some slight video disturbance for about 5 minutes midway through the film but it does not detract from the enjoyment of the film.

Plus these bonus selections...

YORKVILLE DRAFT DODGERS 1966
CAN. News. Yorkville, the beatnik, bohemian and hipster section of Toronto, has become ground zero for U.S. draft dodgers escaping to Canada.

SAMMY DAVIS JR. MEETS DRAFT DODGERS 1968
CAN. News. The Vietnam War has resulted an extraordinary exodus of U.S. youth to Canada. Sammy is in Toronto for two weeks of performances, is opposed to the war, and talks to some U.S. draft dodgers.
